On this Flag Day, it's a good time to look back on how one neighborhood took covenant enforcement too far.
In May of last year, an HOA in Woodstock, GA decided to enforce their rules to the letter, and asked homeowners to take down their American flags unless it was a holiday. Read the full story here. Needless to say, that idea went over like a lead balloon. Not only did the homeowners ignore the Board's request, but now their neighborhood was actually in the news because of its annoying rules. When your goal is to help the property values in a neighborhood, you definitely don't want this sort of bad publicity.
It's usually not this easy to see when enforcing a rule crosses the line from helping beautify the neighborhood and enhance property values, over to angering your homeowners and attracting negative attention to your community.
